Meet The President of ARS

By: Monica Herrera

Angelique is our first president at Ann Richards. She ran like everybody else, campaigning and giving a speech. There were many candidates that also ran for President that when I asked her about running she said, “It was nerve wrecking. There were so many great candidates. I was scared I wasn’t going to win, but I kept believing.” When Angelique spoke, she spoke of leadership and made promises which she is currently fulfilling. When Angelique found out she won the election she admitted, “I was like ‘Oh My God’ I almost cried.”

Angelique’s didn’t have only one speech. She has also given speeches at the Dedication Ceremony and at the Open House and at the Student Council Induction Ceremony. She says, “I’m always nervous because I don’t want to offend anybody and I have to stay on topic.” It’s hard to believe she is so nervous, she is always making everybody laugh and she seems so natural. When I asked her how she does it she said, “It’s like I am talking to my family.” Angelique has given wonderful speeches that everybody loves.

Angelique runs the student council meetings after school on Tuesday and does a wonderful job. According to Angelique there are ups and downs of being president. She says, “Its fun to know what’s on the agenda and other’s opinion on things is besides mine. It is a pain though, that I can’t make motions and vote.”

Her response to my question about how it’s like was, “It’s good. But it’s challenging meeting peoples’ needs.” Angelique does a great job running as president and doesn’t make anything look like a challenge. To her, “It feels like normal most of the time. There is no special treatment.”

Throughout the day girls go up to Angelique and talk to her. Most of the comments that have to deal about student council are what the students want. “There are mostly complaints about lockers. I tell them that the locker committee is trying.” Most people like a president who tells them what they know so that is another fantastic quality our president has.

A question that Angelique has not yet thought about is next year. Is she going to run for student council president? “I haven’t thought about that. Maybe. I am not sure.”
On the Student Council meeting on March 18, she declared, “Next year I will not run for president,” she explained she wanted other girls to have the chance to run for office. What a great person to make a sacrifice like that!
